ICAHD’s Release of Internal EU Document Raises Troubling Questions
On March 7, an Associated Press story reported that the Israel Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) disseminated an internal EU document claiming Israel is “illegally annexing East Jerusalem”.
This article raises many troubling questions:
How did ICAHD get a copy of this report – an internal EU document? Who at the EU was aware of this document exchange?
ICAHD was a previous recipient of a grant for €473,000 from the EU. Does the funding relationship also allow for NGO access to secret/internal EU documents?
What was the level of collaboration between EU-ICAHD officials?
Documentation regarding the EU funding process for particular NGOs in the region is not publicly available and the EU is not transparent about its procedures. Is the potentially unethical exchange between ICAHD and the EU one reason why the EU refuses to disclose such documentation to the public?
The EU did not renew ICAHD’s funding in 2008. Was the public disclosure of this document a revenge stunt by ICAHD?
Inquiring minds (and probably European taxpayers) would like to know . . .
