HRW Advertisements for Middle East Employment Underemphasize Importance of Hebrew
Human Rights Watch is advertising for the position of “Project Leader” for the Middle East and North Africa Division’s Civilian Protection Initiative. Although the position calls for “fluent skills in speaking and reading English and Arabic and excellent writing skills in English,” knowledge of Hebrew is not a requirement. HRW’s failure to acknowledge Hebrew’s central role in the political, social and economic climate in the Middle East is further manifest in the organization’s advertisement for the position of “Researcher on Israel/Occupied Palestinian Territories for the Middle East and North Africa Division”. For this position, candidates must have “excellent skills speaking and reading in both English and Arabic and writing in English,” but “proficiency in Hebrew” is only “very desirable.”
