Christian Aid, Sabeel and EU-funded NGOs Press Hamas Campaign in UK Parliament

October 2nd, 2007 by NGO Monitor Staff | Category: Christian Aid, ICAHD, Sabeel, War on Want

A number of British charities that claim to promote universal human rights and humanitarian assistance, including Christian Aid, War on Want, and Pax Christi, allied with fringe pro-Palestinian political groups such as Sabeel, “Jews Against Zionism”, Medical Aid for Palestinians, ICAHD (funded by the EU), the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the antisemitic MPAC (Muslim Public Affairs Committee)* have announced a “lobby” focused on the British parliament on 28 November, to coincide with the “International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people”.

Under the heading of “Democratic principles”, this statement declares its support for British government recognition of Hamas, and for “help to reconcile the differences between Fatah and Hamas.” Consistent with their agenda and previous campaigns, there is no mention of rocket attacks from Gaza on Israeli cities or other Hamas-led terror attacks, including the massive suicide bombings during the past decade. Instead, they call for assisting Hamas in consolidating its power, stating “Our government must end the economic and political isolation of Gaza immediately.” Repeating the double standards and distortions based on international legal jargon, the flyer declares “Our government must respect the International Court of Justice advisory opinion regarding the illegal wall in the West Bank and Jerusalem and hold Israel to account.” (Hamas, through the Izz al-Din al-Qassem Brigades is classified as a proscribed terror group by the UK government.)

While such extreme biased statements are part of the standard fare for pro-Palestinian political groups, the involvement of NGOs such as Christian Aid, War on Want, and Pax Christi, further exacerbates the conflict, and violates the basic principles that govern charities and their claims to promote universal moral norms.

By participating in this activity, the leaders of Christian Aid are also demonstrating that it has not changed its policies following the 2004 anti-Israel Christmas campaign.
