At NGO Monitor this week… Week ending Jan 25th 2008
January 25th, 2008 by Andre Oboler | Category: NGO Monitor
This is the first of our weekly blog reports keeping people informed on the regular work of NGO Monitor. Comments on our work are welcome.
NGO Monitor published a report on Tuesday detailing the responses of NGOs towards the Gaza crisis.
This week NGO Monitor has also highlighted two article dealing directly with NGOs:
- On Sunday Anna Morgan published an article entitled ‘Gearing up for another Durban’ at the star.com. This article noted that a budget has been allocated for the Durban 2001 follow-up conference, which will take place in 2009. The article note that the Canadian government has “resisted lending support to the Durban II initiative.” Morgan also notes that, “Canada is also one of only seven countries which voted against creating a Durban II conference to begin with.”
- The other article which captured NGO Monitor’s attention was published a year ago, “Human Rights and Politicized Human Rights: A Utilitarian Critique” was published in the Journal of Human Rights. The article enumerates how major humanitarian NGOs have failed to act as an international system of checks and balances against governments which commit atrocities. Those in need of humanitarian aid are the ones who suffer when this occurs.
