UN Watch issues detailed updates on two upcoming UN “fiascos” of Israel-bashing

UN Watch has issued detailed updated of two upcoming UN conferences. According to UN Watch, the upcoming meeting of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, which will take place in Belgium at the European Parliament August 30-31, promises to be an “anti-Israel hate fest”:

“What the conference will pronounce is pre-determined. Carefully pre-determined: the UN’s Palestinian Division runs a tightly-controlled operation that accredits only anti-Israel NGOs and speakers. And recently they’ve become quite clever. Without altering the virulently anti-Israel nature of their meetings, the organizers instead seek to mask their activities - under such innocent-sounding titles as “support for Israeli-Palestinian peace.” Moreover, to add credence to their cover, they invite specially approved “Israelis” - a select group of radicals who openly espouse hatred of Israel, claiming the license to do so because of their citizenship. Both tactics give conference organizers the cover they need for their allies and enablers to then use the material.

Among the speakers at the conference are Michel Warschawski, who proudly describes himself as a “well-known anti-Zionist activist.” Others speakers include Nurit Peled Elhannan, Amira Hass, Raji Sourani, Jamal Jumaa (Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign), Mohammed Khatib (Popular Committee of Bilin Coordinator), and David Shearer (OCHA). See the recent meeting in South Africa, featuring Gideon Levy and others, to get a sense of what to expect in Brussels.”

In addition, UN Watch has this to report regarding the upcoming UN preparatory conference for Durban 2009:

“Anti-Western propaganda is expected to dominate an upcoming UN gathering in Geneva that will chart the agenda for a major world conference against racism in 2009. Although the official mandate of the August 27-31 session is limited to reviewing follow-up from the discredited 2001 anti-racism conference in Durban, South Africa, observers expect the Islamic bloc to introduce new accusations against the U.S., Europe, and other Western nations, under the charge of “religious defamation.” With Colonel Khadaffi’s envoy as conference chair, this is another fiasco in the making.

UN Watch was the first to report and protest Libya’s designation as chair, and now other human rights groups are joining ranks. Antoine Madelin of the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues blasted  Libya’s nomination, recalling the “persecution of black minorities who come to work in Libya.” Madelin also recalled how the 2001 conference featured “racist comments against Jews - caricatures of Jews that would have been used at the time of World War II.”
