Jewish groups mull holding alternative to Durban II
May 27, Jerusalem Post, Etgar Lefkovits

The Jerusalem Report reports that Jewish organizations, including UN Watch, are “considering holding an event concomitant to a controversial UN anti-racism conference planned for next year.” Amos Hermon, chairman of the quasi-governmental Jewish Agency’s Task Force against Anti-Semitism, wants this alterative confercence to dwarf the DRC and include various religious and human rights leaders. The article also reports that various Jewish organizations continue to lobby European countries to boycott the DRC.

Reuters reports on the selection of Geneva as a location for the DRC and the accompanying “difficult negotiations between Western and Islamic countries amid calls by American Jewish groups for the United States to boycott what they fear could be an anti-Israel event, according to diplomats involved.” The OIC maintains significant representation on the Human Rights Council and is an influential body in contributing to the objectives of the DRC.

Reuters also reports that diplomats have agreed on which NGOs may be accredited to the DRC (presumably the NGOs that NGO Monitor reported on last month) and have begun drafting the conference’s final document. It was also reported that Nigeria has offered to host the African regional meetings of the DRC.
